Beach Family Portraits

My super sweet cousin asked me to photograph her little family down in Dana Point California. I love getting to see her and visit and was honored she asked me to take their photos. After having just celebrated his second birthday, we headed out to the beach to do a quick sunset session. Here are a few of the photos from their family sunset beach session.

An over tired two year old can be a challenge but we a few quick poses and letting him hold on to his new truck toy, we managed to get some great shots. It doesn’t hurt that he’s adorable. 

Shooting at sunset on a popular beach can be a difficult task. People roaming in and out of the shot and trying to make sure the lighting is right are all things to consider while still posing and trying to get a great portrait. 

While I do pose my subjects I also try to have them interact with one another in a natural way. This little moments make for powerful portraits and are often my favorite images from a session. Those few seconds when your subjects forget they are in front of a camera and are just being mom, or dad, brother or sister. A simple laugh between siblings or a quick kiss from mom shows those deep and emotional connections we have with our family members, and I for one think those are images we want to capture and remember forever. 

I really do love my job, and when I get to photograph my own family and close friends it makes it all the more amazing. One of my favorite things about my job is when the Holiday’s come. The Holiday cards start coming in, and there on their card are images I captured for them.

Christmas Tree Lot Family Portraits

I’ve had the honor to photograph this family twice in the past year. These twins are adorable and incredibly sweet. This year the wanted their Christmas card to have a fun element to it, so we went to a local Christmas tree lot to capture this beautiful family. 

We were lucky enough that a little storm came through that day and softened the sun light for us. It was cold and wet but this family knows how to laugh and have a great time no matter what. This was the first time I did a Christmas tree lot shoot, but I have a feeling it wont be my last. What a fun way to capture the holiday and share it with family and friends. I love the custom family sweat shirts she had made for them. 

I love the photo of the twins choosing and carrying their tree. I hope they have fond memories of their mini Christmas Tree lot photo shoot.

Lucky for me these twin three year olds are always giggling and willing to play along with me, I get to capture authentic smiles and laughs. When you ask them to pretend to chop down one of the trees, they go wild and hack like crazy, it took me a moment to stop laughing and remind them to slow down so I could photograph them. This was such a fun way to spend a rainy Monday morning. 

I hope this sweet family had a wonderful holiday season and that Santa treated them to whatever they wished for. 

Photographer Kids

I talked a little bit about the session I did of my own kids in a past post. I talked about using the same location in the river bed at Riverwalk Park. These two session where shot over a month apart, but in that short time the wild location had changed considerably. While it was very lush and green in October’s session, the leaves had begun to yellow and change by the end of November. Many of the smaller plants had died off or where gone completely. 

Any photographer will tell you how hard it is to photograph their own kids. Our kids tend to be photographed a lot, and used as test subjects for set ups, lighting test and location scouting, so when it’s time to update their portraits or for a special occasion, they can be a bit more difficult then the average client kid. I usually also bribe them and often beg for real smiles. 

My daughters are getting so big, and it blows my mind every time I stop to think about it. I’m not that far from being a mom to a teenager. I’m not old enough for that, right? 

Another thing that shocks me, is how different my girls look from one another. While my oldest is a brunette my younger is a blonde. One of the only common traits they share is their blue eyes. 

My older daughter looks a lot like my husbands side of the family, she’s definitely his mini me, while my youngest looks like a combination of my mom’s side and a bit of my husbands family.

These two have completely different interest and personalities as well. It’s been amazing to watch them become who they are and embrace their passions. While one loves Star Wars, science and band, the other is all about make up, cheer leading, and unicorns. 

I’m so grateful I found photography, if nothing else I have more photos of my girls than I would have ever had, I get to capture their childhood in a way I never would have with out it. I love being their mom and can’t wait to see the amazing women they will become. 

Sunset Family Portraits

Sunset family portraits are my favorite. I’ve been photographing my friends family for well, my entire photography career. For their family session this year we went over to Riverwalk park and headed down into the dry riverbed. Where wild plants grow and trees flourish. I Love the overgrown and wild look of this location. We don’t have a lot of places that get tall lush green grass so I look for places that have more greenery and texture. 

This little family laughs a lot and you can see the bond they share even through the few photos I choose to share from their session. I always encourage my families to be a little silly and play with each other. Kisses from three year olds can be intense and make for some big laughs. 

It can be a challenge to keep little ones interested and mixing in a little fun goes a long way. What kid doesn’t want to be on dads shoulders or asked to hug mom super hard? Big family kisses and silly faces help break up the posed family portraits and inject some personality and fun into a session. 

I loved this location so much I used a few months later for my daughters session. I’ll be sharing those a little later, but if you come back and compare you’ll see how much the location changed in just a short time and is hardly recognizable as the same. 

One of the things I love most about my job is the families that come back each year, I get to watch them add new members and and grow up through the years. It also has a funny way of showing me how much I grow each year as a photographer, even when I think I’m doing the same kinds of things each year. You can’t help but learn even when you don’t realize its happening.

Christmas Cookie Decorating Party with SugarMama

Over the holiday break my sister SugarMama hosted a cookie decorating party. She does this annually and invites close friends. It’s a fun way to learn to decorate sugar cookies like a pro. This year she asked me not only to help with set up and participate, but also to photograph the party for her.

We decorated everything from winter mittens to Mr & Mrs Claus, a snowman and ugly Christmas sweaters. We enjoyed appetizers and champagne while we iced the cookies.

Most of the candid photos I snapped of the other ladies, shows their determination and concentration on the task at hand. These women look pretty serious but I can say first hand, they had a great time.

While they learned to drag one color into another to create the knitted pattern for the mittens and sweaters , to hand wiggled icing holly leaves for Frosty the Snowman’s top hat. 

Remember always squeeze from the top, or your icing bag could explode!

I love that she does these decorating parties, and helps other learn a few tips and tricks to take their own cookie decorating to the next level.

Coastal Country Portraits

I love an excuse to visit my friend and her family over at the coast, so when she asked if I’d do her family portraits again this year, I leapt at the chance to pack up my family and go for visit. Our girls adore each other and love to play. They live in the country and have chickens, my girls love getting to chase them and hunt for eggs. 

We shot their family portraits just down the road from their home. With one lane roads, old wooden fences, wild grass and overgrown trees, we had a wonderful location for their photos. I made sure we moved around in our environment to capture a few different looks for their session and a wide variety of images.

I think one of my personal favorites is the first image of all five of them together looking at the youngest in the center. Being the baby of the family has it’s perks! I also always try to squeeze in a shot or two of just mom and dad, it’s so rare that they get a photo of just the two of them together. Their love is what made all of this family possible so it should be celebrated! 

I also try to get at least one of each child alone. It’s nice to have the individual images of each of your children. While every parent loves the group photos of their beautiful children together, one of each is always a bonus. 

Trying to keep all three children interested in the session can be a bit challenging, maybe more so since my kids where waiting for them to be done so they could play together again. We made it quick and let them get back to all their fun. 

These smiling faces probably look familiar, they are featured on my website in the almond orchards a few years ago. I love getting to help her update her family’s portraits each year.

The Happiest of Holiday's

This family is the cutest! They’ve been on the blog a lot this year, and I feel so blessed and honored to be included in all the amazing milestones they have experienced this year. From the maternity session back in February to the birth of their baby boy and watching him grow and change from month to month. His first year is being well documented and celebrated, I’ve loved every moment. 

My amazing friends have taken to parent hood with grace and a lot of humor. Ethan is now crawling and loves to giggle and get his toys. He’s a complete doll! 

We did the first part of their session at a little park near their home on an overcast afternoon, and we finished up with a few photos of Ethan in the Christmas set up in the studio. It was one of the first chilly days we had in November, so we tried to keep it moving and not let Ethan get too cold. 

Once we finished up the family portraits we focussed on just adorable little Ethan in his Christmas pajamas. He loved getting the big ornaments and the little trees. He was a wonderful little model for his pictures. We did these right before he started crawling, thankfully we didn’t have to chase him down to keep him on set. I love capturing those real smiles that light up the eyes. His little mischievous smile is adorable. 

This family has already sent out their Holiday cards, I received mine this past week. I get so excited and feel so much joy receiving cards with the photos I took on them. My job is so amazing that way. 

I’m sure if Ethan could talk he would tell you to have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

It's Almost Christmas!

Christmas is right around the corner. I feel like it snuck up on me this year and soon it will be 2018! I feel like the year went by in a flash. The fall was a blur and before I knew what was happening, the holidays are upon us. Between Thanksgiving and Holiday parties, birthdays and school functions, it’s been busy around here. I have so many blogs to write and share with you, I can’t wait to get them all finished. Some how I even managed to get some photos of my own girls done, and can’t wait to share those with you in another blog. 

 I set up a little Christmas set for kids in the studio, complete with tiny Christmas tree and a big Christmas wreath. My handsome little nephews came by in their adorable dinosaur pajamas to visit and have a few holiday portraits done. I’m starting to think dinosaurs are huge right now, I see stuff everywhere. These two little boys adore each other and tend to climb all over one another while I’m trying to photograph them, it makes for a fun and interesting session. 

Their obsession with dinosaurs is amazing and they constantly roared at me. If I pretend to be scared it makes them giggle. They also come into the house poised as a raptors and stomp and scratch their way around, it’s hilarious. They make for some cute little dinosaurs. 

These little mini sessions are a lot of fun and make for some wonderful holiday keepsakes. This year my sister used the photos from these session on her Christmas cards. 

I’m so happy I get to be a part of the boys lives and help my sister capture and preserve their childhood.  Stay safe and I hope you all have wonderful holidays with your family and friends.

Milkbath and a Cake Smash!

Happy First Birthday to this sweet baby girl! Pearls, fresh flowers, a tutu and cake! This turned into an adorable first birthday session. This little miss was a doll and loved the pearl necklace. She was not very sure about the milk bath, we really had to talk her into it, but once she was in she was a happy girl. This little girl wanted mom nearby the entire time. 

I love the look of the wood back ground with the flowers and the pearls, I think it gives it a timeless look. These sessions are quickly becoming some of my favorites. I love to photograph cake smashes and these milk baths are just as fun! Seriously, these sessions are the cutest! 

We started her session off with a milk bath, but miss wasn’t having it, so I pulled it out and just let her sit with the pearls on with the flowers. I love the images we were able to capture of her, the sweet innocence and those big green eyes and those chubby little cheeks!  She gave us some big smiles too.  

Once we got her in the little tub she loved checking out the floating flowers and splashing the milk. I love the photo of her looking into the camera and holding the pearls while in the little milk bath. Her big eyes are so curious and sweet! 

Her session ended with a pink themed cake smash and gold polkadot tutu! Her mom even made her little cake. She didn’t want to smash the cake but she definitely liked the frosting. 

Hope you enjoyed this little ladies first birthday portraits as much as I did photographing her. Happy First Birthday Little Lady!!!

Ethan is Sitting up!

Every time I see Ethan I’m shocked by how big he is. Now seven months old he is more animated and engaging than ever before. With big smiles and silly giggles his session was fun start to finish.

 We did a special milk bath session to capture this magical age, those photos are down at the bottom of this blog.  First up we did adorable naked baby pics on the sheep skin with a simple wood place floor and backdrop. Ethan was so easy going about his session and dad was a great assistant. 

I love doing sessions for babies this age. So much of their personality shines through and they are just so much fun. Besides whats not to love about cute baby tushy photos? When we put Ethan on his tummy he did a few impressive pushups and peed on my sheepskin, the risk we take for cute naked pictures! 

We even managed to squeeze in a few Green Bay Packer onesie shots for mom and dad. Ethan is a packer fan already!  

We saved the best for last during this session, we made Ethan a milk bath and added some flowers for color and texture. He loved picking up the flowers and trying to eat them, but dad was always ready to stop that, no flowers were ingested during this session. (Also thats a birth mark on his chest.) Watching him interact and absorb the flowers and milk bath was funny and sweet. 

It is such a joy capturing Ethan’s milestones, I love getting to spend some time with him and being a part of this special time. He is a sweet heart and is just a happy little guy.

Twice The Fun!

This sweet family braved one hundred and five degree heat with me for their session. We almost canceled due to the extreme heat, but I’m glad we didn’t and we stuck to the shade for most of the session, taking little breaks for water when needed. Thankfully we are headed into fall and the temperature has dropped almost thirty degrees. 

My first ever set of twins to photograph and they were the happiest three year olds. This mom is raising some adorable kids.

Even with the high temps and to energy filled three year olds, we managed to get a lot of different shots and some really great smiles. You could feel the strong bonds and love that surrounds this wonderful family. 

We did this session over at River Walk Park during golden hour. You know its going to be a great session when the kids get out of the car and immediately hug you. The twins where full of giggles and really enjoyed posing for photos. 

The photo of the twins smiling on the rock makes my heart happy because they were looking at mom behind me, and those are big happy smiles just for her. (top of page)

I love how the ones of Mom alone with one child ended up, with her looking at each child and showcasing her love for each of them. 

The photo of little Miss on the rocks looking off to the right instantly became a personal favorite of mine. The candid pose and sweet smile make this one a keeper for sure. (above)

Our handsome little male model was busting with energy and loved when I asked him to show me how high he could jump. (above)

Not all of the photos had real genuine smiles from our little models, but thats ok, being three means you can get away with that, it also makes those real smiles all the more exciting to capture. I enjoyed this family immensely and can not wait to spend more time creating memories they can keep forever!

Spring Time Boys

I just realized I never got around to sharing these of my nephews. Life was busy when we did this session and while I got them edited and off to my sister soon after the session, I completely forgot to share them here on the site and blog it! Both of her boys are spring babies, so we make sure to get out and update their photos around that time. We took them out to Heart Park and up into the hills there. The over grown grass was still green in places and starting to turn gold.

The boys are so used to me photographing them that they have very little interest in me and my camera. So it can be a challenge to get them to cooperate, similar to my own girls. They want us to let them run free and play, not sit still and smile. 

These two little boys love each other immensely, and I feel like that has been captured in some of their images. I know my sister loves getting out and doing these session and having these photos to keep.

I do my best to pose the boys but often times the moment I walk back to get the shot they break pose and start to do their own thing. The photograph of them looking at the flower and Preston leaned into his big brother is so authentic and typical of these kids right now. Often times they are climbing all over each other and wrestling. 

I personally love the photo of Brandon laying in the grass, this is the first time I felt he looked more grown up then ever before. He is gonna be a heart breaker! He’s so sweet and sensitive but he’s got his smolder look down already at five. Meanwhile Preston is still changing from chubby cheeked toddler into a taller leaner child. 

I love watching these guys grow and getting to be involved in their lives. I hope they look back fondly and remember all their photo shoot with their Tee-tee.

Ethan is 3 Months!

Ethan is growing so fast! I see him pretty regularly but I still can’t believe it every time how big he is getting. We did a life style session for his three month milestone session. It was a fun way to document his nursery and what a day in the life of Ethan kind of looks like. 

He is the happiest little guy, he just smiles and giggles and looks at you with those sweet little eyes. Such a little trooper. 

We just got back from vacationing together recently and even though it was hot and his schedule was disrupted he was still such a happy baby. 

For Ethan’s session we used natural light from the windows. Using both Ethan’s nursery and his parents bedroom. Again I tried to back light or sidelight my subjects to create depth and avoid bright or blown out highlights. This is always the challenge with shooting inside with out a flash, I could have used my flash but I prefer not to for this kind of session. The natural light is so much better if you can make it work for you. 

One image I really like it the one of Amy in the chair holding Ethan. This is what it would really look like to walk by his nursery and see them in there together, playing together or reading a story. 

Another favorite of mine and I think his parents would agree, is the photo of them all together on the big bed looking and talking to him. 

Being parents really agrees with these too special people. I love watching them interact with him and how they work together as a team. These two are in it together and love their little guy to the moon and back. 

Happy 3 Month birthday Ethan!

Beautiful Baby Gabrielle

Baby Gabrielle came by for her newborn session and she was the sweetest. This little nine pounder was mostly cheeks and couldn’t have been any cuter. While she did pee on her mom three times we didn’t let that stop us from capturing this little beauties first photos. Gabrielle just wanted to snuggle mom and eat but she did let me get some really adorable photos for her parents. 

These new parents were over the moon to have this little girl. After arriving a little later than mom would have liked, she finally arrived and stole everyones heart. We had a great laugh over all the pee, it just kept happening. Newborn photography can be very messy people!

Sweet little Gabrielle even gave us a couple little smiles in her sleep, and I love the way she put her hand on her chin, she just naturally wanted to sleep that way. Those sweet little lips and tiny little fingers. 

As a mom my self I know that a photo of the man you love holding your newborn baby brings on all the feelings, it’s so magical to see them hold these tiny little people and know how much they love them. 

She was almost to big for my crate at twenty one and a half inches long and I had to really talk her into it but once I did she fell asleep and I think she ended up really liking it. 

My girls are so big now and having a sweet little newborn baby to hold and snuggle is such an amazing job to have. Sometimes I just want to sit and hold them and smell that new baby smell.

Football Senior Session

This 2017 Senior picture session was inspired by football and downtown Bakersfield. This handsome senior had too many amazing images to share them all. So i picked out a few of my own personal favorites to share with you here on the blog.

These two stunning black and white football shots (top photos) might be some of my all time favorite images! He had his game face down. The high contrast and side lighting helps to create depth and dimension and makes for some eye popping photographs. These football photos where a different and fun opportunity to try something new and completely different from my usual work. I definitely plan to do more.  

 After a few snaps in the studio we took this senior session out to downtown Bakersfield for some of the great looking brick, architecture and columns downtown has to offer. This architecture adds a lot of texture to an image. Trying to keep things fun and interesting we moved around a lot on location. Using the benches, stairs, light post and just about anything else I could to get some fun and different images for his gallery. I tried to keep his session relaxed and fun.

Another one of my favorites from this gallery was this candid of him on the sidewalk looking off into the distance, not to be out done by the one of him leaning against the light post in the blue button down. So many great photos! I’m trying to resist adding his full gallery to the blog. 

I’m sure he is more at home on a football field than he is in front of a camera, but he rocked his session and took home a ton of great photos to celebrate this point in his life. He has a great future ahead of him. Congrats Grad and good luck!!!!

Nash's Newborn Lifestyle Session

This gorgeous family welcomed Nash this spring and we celebrated their new family member with a lifestyle newborn session in their home. Lifestyle sessions are completely different from a posed studio newborn session. Capturing a family in their home with their new baby is very special. Our lives and style change so much year to year, and to have a few photo’s showcasing your life and how is was at such a life changing moment it something to be treasured. 

I know that my girls are surprised to look back at photos and see what our home looked like when they were brand new.

So here are a few of the photos from Nash’s newborn lifestyle session.

Nash’s session was fun and challenging at the same time. Going into a location without having seen it can be a little nerve-racking to a photographer. I had hoped to use natural light only and got lucky that their home had an abundance of windows in the room we planned to shoot the session in. Lucky for me we were able to mostly light them from the side to create some shadows and give their images some depth while still keeping them lighter over all. Each session brings new challenges and amazing discoveries, and helps to shape me as an artist.  

It can be so hard to choose one image as a favorite from a session where so many photos turned out wonderful. I know I love the full family photo (top of blog) and the one with Nash and his mom, she was still glowing so soon after having him! Seriously she looks amazing!!! 

Nash is so lucky to have such an amazing family. This wonderful little family is filled with love and it’s such a pleasure and joyous thing to have a job capturing all that love in a few frames.

Welcome to the world Nash!!!

Welcome to the world Ethan!

This beautiful baby boy was totally worth the wait! Ethan was a little baby at five pounds fourteen ounces and nineteen inches long. This handsome baby was born February 28. Ethan is a dream! He is all smiles and snuggles. His parents Chris and Amy are over the moon in love and it’s easy to see why. I’m so blessed to call these amazing people my friends and look forward to watching Ethan grow and learn. My personal favorite from Ethan’s newborn session was the white set up. The crisp clean innocence of a new baby in the world. 

Ethan’s newborn session was mellow and he was such a wonderful little sleeper. We made sure to incorporate an extra special set up of Ethan with his fathers campus and the trail guide to Chris’s favorite hiking trail. I know this meant so much to Chris and I hope I did it justice. 

I think the photos of new parents Chris and Amy captured their overwhelming joy and the love they have for baby Ethan. They waited so very long for him and they love him tremendously.

The little brown bear hat was made by a mutual friend of ours, making it’s use for Ethan’s newborn session all the more special. 

There are so many photos from Ethan’s newborn session that it’s been terribly difficult to only select a few to share here. His little blonde eyebrows and perfectly pouty lips are adorable. I also love his little forehead wrinkles, like he’s already trying to figure out this big new world. 

Getting to snuggle him and have the honor of photographing Ethan brings me so much happiness. I look forward to adding a lot more blogs about Ethan as he grows up. Can’t wait to cuddle him again soon and share his beautiful photos with all of you.

Spring Maternity Session

It’s spring in Bakersfield, at the end of February the almond orchards bloomed and our landscape turned green. The rain has be amazing this year and I’m so glad I got to get out and shoot some photos before the heat hits and turns everything golden. 

This expectant mom was glowing for her maternity photos. I love the photo of mom laying down and looking up at dad. How sweet is that? It shows off her growing bump and a wonderful connection between husband and wife. 

This gorgeous family is expecting a baby any time now and we went out and captured some beautiful photos for them to celebrate this exciting time in their little family. We did their maternity session at the almond orchards first but big sister wasn’t feeling well and we were unable to take photos with her. I focused on mom and dad and the wonderful bond and excitement they are experiencing over the new baby. 

Some time later we went out to Heart Park and did more family photos now that big sister was feeling better. With this part of their session I wanted to get a lot of family shots and focus on big sister. Big sister is adorable and informed me that once the baby is born it will be her baby.

I took a little time to just photograph big sister to be, letting her play with the flowers and interact with her environment. With a few wildflowers about and a setting sun these images capture childhood innocence is a beautiful way.  

I’m so excited for this wonderful family and can’t wait to meet their new baby.

Joanie's Cake Smash

Joanie came to see me for her first birthday. This was my first time meeting this little doll. She was a delight and an excellent little model! She was a dream to photograph. We did several wardrobe changes for her cake smash / first birthday session. 

We started her out in the adorable pink and gold polka dot romper her mom brought with matching headband. This little girl was rocking her pink look and we got lost of big smiles and giggles from her session. I like to start my one year sessions with them standing up and holding onto something. Often times this includes a white chair I painted and sanded to look older, one year olds love to be on their feet but they are not always strong walkers. This lets them stand and be happy while we warm them up to their photo shoot. 

I’m also a photographer that loves a close up of the face. I want to see those beautiful eyes and eyelashes. I want to see those details up close and capture them in that moment for eternity. Little ones change so fast but having an image of what they looked like at one is such a treasure.

Her next romper was floral and just as cute as the first, mom really knew what to bring for her one year milestone session. 

I love taking a photo of the birthday kid with mom, just from the waist down of mom holding their hands. It’s a photo that includes mom with out her feeling so much pressure to have perfect hair and make up, it’s just hands and legs and you supporting your little one. It’s a really great shot.  

Joanie was excited to dig into her cake once we brought it out. This happy one year old smashed and gobbled up her yummy pink cake.
